The population of Wales is close to being 50/50 split between women and men.

This gender split isn’t however reflected in senior decision making roles in the workplace, be it the private, public or third sectors.

Across the board women continue to be underrepresented in these roles and this has an impact both on the ability for women to progress to senior posts and also on the decision making capabilities of the organisations concerned.

Put simply if your decision making team is reflective of the society you are working in and for then together as a team you become better placed to make decisions.

This is because the decision making capability will have a balance that reflects the 50/50 gender spit and should serve to ensure decisions become more appropriate and effective as they will be based on the full knowledge and experience each gender can intrinsically provide.

There has been a lot of negativity around the current picture but the 50/50 by 2020 campaign is a positive way to help us in Wales take steps to actively achieve gender balance amongst our decision makers.

By supporting the campaign not only will more women progress into these roles, but their thinking and decision making capabilities will advantageously help their employers to make decisions that are more appropriate and ultimately more profitable.

We are particularly keen to see men sign up to support this campaign as they yield the greatest power in the economic and social life of Wales.

Without men as committed allies, genuine change will continue to elude us and talented women will not shine through as they deserve to.
