What is 50/50 by 2020?

50/50 by 2020 is a campaign to encourage organisations across all sectors in Wales to increase the number of women in decision making positions to a representative 50% by the year 2020.

This is the headline message for the campaign, however 50/50 by 2020 fully appreciates that no two organisations are the same.

For some it will be relatively straightforward to achieve, whereas others will need to look more deeply into their organisational structures to ensure sufficient women are employed and then developed to progress as part of a planned programme.

50/50 by 2020 aims to be a catalyst to allow those who have achieved 50/50 to provide inspiration to others, and a campaign for those striving to achieve 50/50 to publically show their commitment to achieving it.

Who is 50/50 by 2020?

50/50 by 2020 is the coming together of a group of leaders from a broad cross-section of Welsh organisations who wanted to make a positive contribution to change rather than complaining about the current poor profile of women in leadership positions. The campaign is being administered by Chwarae Teg who as a charity has over 21 years’ experience of helping women to progress in the workplace.

The campaign has been founded by key organisations including: The Equalities and Human Rights Commissioner, Sport Wales, IoD Wales, Chwarae Teg, Women Count, Women Making a Difference, Business in Focus, Welsh Government and the National Assembly.

How do I get to use the logo?

It’s simple 50/50 by 2020 is a voluntary sign-up campaign so once you’ve signed-up and provided your firm and decisive commitment we will email the logo to you for use on your website.

It’s important to stress 50/50 by 2020 isn’t an accreditation scheme; it’s an awareness raising action prompting campaign.

What happens when I sign-up?

Is there a way to gain more publicity for the work we’re doing to achieve 50/50 by 2020?

Absolutely, and the easiest thing to do is complete our success story form and email it back to us. We’ll then add you to the site as a success story and we’ll share your story across Social Media. We also review the stories as they come in and if we see potential for a media story we’ll develop your story into a press release that supports you and the campaign.

Why is this about women who are already leaders? What about women who are on benefits or struggling along on low pay?

We believe that the more we do to push talented women forward the better it will be for women in general as we need compassion and support to be driving more senior behaviours.

What about other excluded groups who strive to shine through?

We are aware that there are other diversity challenges as well as gender equality but getting half the population into a position where they can influence change will be good for everyone.

What about people who don’t live in Wales?

Anyone in the world can join but we are kicking this off in Wales as this where we are based and we needed to start in our own back yard. With our values for fairness and equality, a small country like Wales has an opportunity to lead the way.
